Super Parent Skills Workshop
How do we not make it worse?
Is a question we get often from parents and loved ones trying to support their child, teen, adult child or loved one suffering from Emotional Dysregulation, whether it manifest in the form of Depression, Anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder, Substance Abuse, Self Harm, Bipolar symptoms ...
Doesn't matter what I do it ... it is not helping?!?!
We've put together a series to combat this feeling.
We are going to focus on not making it worse.
We can start here, where we are, in the trenches not making it worse. We will learn to focus on our own reactions and how to manage them in a different way. The ins and outs of Validation, what it is and what it is not are the keys to not making it worse, learning to tolerate the discomfort and ultimately make it better.

This Class is about ...
This group offers parents of children ages 10 and up a selection of very usable coping evidence based strategies. Open to one or both parents. Your child does not have to be in therapy in order to attend.
The strategies and skills offered are in the following areas:
Relational Mindfulness - Often it is our lack of awareness (mindfulness) to what is underneath our rapid thoughts or feeling in a given moment AND our inability to keep our relationship in mind that leads to over-reaction, under-reaction or avoiding the problem altogether. Parenting is a difficult job in and of itself and so lack of mindfulness to what is rising for us as parents can lead to exacerbation, over reactions, invalidation and/or prolonging of issues. You are here because you love your child, we will talk about not losing that focus ... Get ready for some eye opening moments.
Distress Tolerance - Crisis Survival Skills offers concrete strategies in order to manage tense or difficult situations. Skills such as how to how to "IMPROVE a moment" and how to effectively distract yourself when very emotions are rising will be taught.
Interpersonal Effectiveness - This is where the rubber meets the road. How to effectively Ask for What You Want, Say No, Keep Your Relationships while also getting what you want, and Keeping your Self-Respect will be taught and practiced utilizing DEAR MAN, FAST & GIVE skills. Particular attention will be paid to effectiveness in communication - between parents and between parent and child. There will be homework for sure.
Emotion Regulation - How to understand and manage your own emotions so everything does not boil over is key here. Particular attention will be paid to keeping your emotional temperature within the "cool" range so that you can parent effectively.
Behavior Change - We will learn what works and what is not as effective. This is an aha moment for many parents. Leave this class with a real understanding of what to do next to not make it worse and gain some improvement.
